Active Projects

At any given time, Boston Mobilization is engaged in a variety of projects. The active projects at Mobe change as the needs of the community change and as the passions of Mobe's members bring relevant issues to the fore. Below is a summary of Mobe's active projects.

Campaign to Stop Bioweapons

Weekly meetings will resume in the Fall.

In February 2003, President Bush announced Project BioShield- a $6 billion, 10-year project to increase the U.S.ís bioterrorism capacity. Through Project BioShield, Boston University has been approved to receive $1.6 billion to build a biological agent research lab in the South End, adjacent to its current medical center. The facility has received a BioSafety Level 4 rating, the highest security classification for such research, as it will deal solely with the most infectious and incurable pathogens such as ebola, anthrax, and plague. Boston University students are opposing the construction of this hazardous lab. Boston Mobilization is working in close partnership with a coalition of Boston community groups, including ACE and Safety Net, and Bug Bloc, and the Council for Responsible Genetics to stop the construction of this project. Youth Empowerment Project (YEP)

Weekly meetings are subject to change - Please go to our
YEP Calendar
for upcoming YEPmeetings and workshops.

Boston Mobilizations's Youth Empowerment project trains student and community activists to facilitate workshops promoting peace, anti-racism, and critical thinking. These youth-led, popular education workshops are presented in Colleges, High Schools and Middle Schools throughout the Greater Boston Area.Learn more.

Grassroots Media Project

Weekly meetings held in the Mobe office, time TBA.

A project all its own and yet part of every other project at some point, the Grassroots Media Project serves as the media outreach branch of Boston Mobilization. GMP interns coordinate and produce materials such as press releases and posters, and help train other Mobe interns in matters of getting out their message. The Grassroots Media Project is also dedicated to promoting alternative, independent sources of information, including local progressive news outlets, and the GMP's own production, Spark Magazine, which ran for several issues and is still distributed free of charge at Boston Mobilization events. Counter-Recruitment

Weekly meetings will resume in the Fall.

The US military is making a stronger push than ever before to recruit our nation's youth. With flashy commericials and unbelievable promises, thousands to high school students are being shipped off to fight. Military recruiters are highly concentrated in high schools across the country and talk with students in cafeterias, hallways, even at commencement ceremonies. The law states that if a school allows recruiters onto their campus, they must extend the same courtesy to counter-recruiters.

Mobe is working with Project Hip Hop to go into Boston's high schools to educate students about alternatives to military service, the fine-print that recruiters may not tell them, and encourage them to "Opt Out" of the being placed into the national registry that all public schools are required to submit to under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Weekly Staff Meetings

Fridays at 10:30 AM in the Democracy Center.

Public meetings where staff and organizers come together to update the group on the status of their project and discuss future plans for Mobe.
